The National Rural Youth Service Corps (NARYSEC) Programme has officially opened recruitment for the 2026/27 intake in the Western Cape. The programme is aimed at empowering unemployed young people living in rural communities by providing skills development, leadership training, and access to future economic opportunities.
The Department of Land Reform and Rural Development (DLRRD) is currently recruiting eligible youth from Knysna Local Municipality for specialised training opportunities in Traffic Officer Training and Fire Fighting.

About the Employer
The Department of Land Reform and Rural Development established the National Rural Youth Service Corps (NARYSEC) Programme in 2010 to address unemployment among young people living in rural communities.
The programme supports the goals of the National Development Plan (Vision 2030) and the Comprehensive Rural Development Programme (CRDP) by equipping youth with skills, work readiness, leadership development, and economic participation opportunities.
About the NARYSEC Programme
The NARYSEC Programme focuses on developing young people through structured training, leadership development, and skills programmes linked to identified economic opportunities.
Successful applicants will be required to attend:
- NARYSEC Induction Programme
- Youth Leadership Development Programme (YLDP)
Participants will be required to stay away from home for approximately 9 weeks during the training period.

Available Training Opportunities
Traffic Officer Training
The programme prioritises youth interested in pursuing careers within law enforcement and traffic services.
Additional advantage:
- Code C1 Driver’s Licence with PrDP
- Code EB Driver’s Licence
Fire Fighting Training
The programme also prioritises recruitment for Fire Fighting training opportunities.
Additional requirements:
- Must not be claustrophobic
- Must not be acrophobic (fear of heights)
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be between 18 and 35 years old
- Possess a Grade 12 certificate
- Be medically fit
- Be unemployed
- Not be enrolled at any higher learning institution
- Have no criminal record or pending criminal case
- Provide a Police Clearance Certificate
- Provide a Medical Certificate
- Be registered with SARS and provide proof
- Be able to speak at least two of the three official Western Cape languages
- Be willing to study outside the Western Cape if required
- Reside within the Knysna Municipal Area
Physical Fitness Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be capable of running 2.4 kilometres in less than 11–12 minutes
- Meet all medical fitness requirements
- Successfully complete health screening assessments
For Fire Fighting candidates:
- Must not suffer from claustrophobia
- Must not suffer from acrophobia (fear of heights)
