Position Purpose
The Trainee Train Assistant will support the Train Driver in the safe and efficient operation of trains and locomotives, ensuring freight and cargo reach destinations safely, on time, and in good condition.
You will gain practical exposure to passenger trains, heavy haul operations, high-speed locomotives, as well as airbrake and vacuum systems.
Key Responsibilities
Locomotive Preparation
Sign on duty and receive daily work allocation.
Prepare locomotives before departure.
Perform brake tests together with the Train Driver.
Clean and inspect working areas.
Dispatch locomotives safely.
Communication and Safety Checks
Prepare radios, walkie-talkies and telemeters.
Check communication equipment functionality.
Conduct pre-trip safety inspections.
Train Operations Support
Assist with coupling and uncoupling wagons.
Perform shunting activities in sidings.
Observe signals and safe train movement.
Protect trains during incidents or emergencies.
Administration Duties
Complete train journals after every shift.
Provide route feedback to the Train Driver.
Submit documentation to the Section Manager.
Minimum Requirements
Education
Grade 12 with Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
Age and Physical Requirements
Applicants must be 21 years or older.
Minimum height requirement is 1.6m.
Candidates must be physically fit with good vision and hearing.
Ability to carry heavy objects is required.
Applicants must pass medical and safety assessments.
Training Requirement
