Job description

Purpose

The HR Generalist role is comprehensive and operational in nature, encompassing the full employee lifecycle while providing support to both management and staff across a wide range of HR functions.

 Key responsibilities

  • Execute HR action plans aligned with overall people strategy.
  • Administer payroll-related remuneration and benefits and manage staff enquiries.
  • Maintain and update job descriptions, job grading, employment contracts, and accurate employee records.
  • Manage recruitment processes including advertising, shortlisting, interviewing, and onboarding.
  • Facilitate offboarding and exit administration effectively.
  • Provide employee relations support including discipline, grievance management, and advice on policies.
  • Employer representation at CCMA.
  • Compile accurate HR reports for management and statutory compliance.
  • Partner with academic and administrative units to drive talent management, people development, and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Provide coaching on performance management, conflict resolution, and change management.
  • Facilitate culture development and continuous improvement activities through employee engagement metrics.
  • Act as a trusted HR advisor, balancing business objectives with employee experience.

Skills and competencies

  • In-depth knowledge of South African labour laws and employment legislation.
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and HR information systems.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a dynamic team environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a customer service mindset.
  • Confident, independent thinker with empathy and professionalism

Qualifications and experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in human resource management.
  • Minimum 5 years operational HR experience, preferably in private higher education.
  • Experience working with an HR information system.
  • Experience in industrial relations and CCMA representation.
